The British government reportedly proposed a resolution that would allow teenage girls to avail of contraceptive injections without consent from their parents. These efforts are made to avoid the increase of teenage pregnancy incidents.

This move solicited protests from several medical experts and parents, stating that it would only encourage the teenagers to conduct premarital sex and would eventually lead to increasing number of sexually-transmitted diseases.

According to reports, the contraceptive thickens the cervical mucus thus blocking the entrance of sperm. This avoids ovulations. Another thing is the thinning of the uterus lining, which prevents the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

Gynecologists said that the effectiveness of the contraceptive is nearly 100 percent when it comes to preventing pregnancies.

There are several options for the teenagers and adults to choose from. They can avail of monthly injections or others that can be done once every three months. In order for the contraceptive to be effective, the shots must be done regularly. The cost of each shot ranges between $50 and $100.

Side effects include increase in weight due to fluid retention and irregular periods. Before undergoing such treatment, patients should consult with their doctors.
