‘Gravid’ is one of the scientific terms for state c
alled ‘pregnancy’. The pregnant lady is, at times, called ‘Gravida’. These words usually do not find entry in the common speech. Just like that, term ‘parity’, which has been abbreviated as ‘para’ gets used for numerous flourishing live births. In medical terms, the woman who hasn’t been pregnant before or isn’t pregnant at present can be called as ‘nulligravida’, and ‘multiparous’ or ‘multigravida’ in the subsequent pregnancies. That’s why; at the time of 2nd pregnancy, the woman is to be described by the name ‘gravida 2, para 1’ and ‘gravida 2, para 2’ after delivery.
Incomplete pregnancies such as stillbirths, miscarriages, or abortions go on to account for the values of parity being < gravida number, while multiple birth would lead to increase in parity value. The women never carrying pregnancy for > 20 weeks as per gestation age can be described as being ‘nulliparous’.
The term ‘embryo’ has been used for describing the offspring that is still in its development stage, i.e. the one in the 1st 8 weeks following the conception. The term ‘foetus’ has been used from around 2 months of the development till birth. As such, medical science has lots of terminologies to offer.
