The incidence of teenage pregnancy in the town of Tema New Town in Ghana has reportedly increased based on the total number of deliveries recorded in Manhean Health Center last year.
Out of the 888 births recorded at the hospital, about 343 were teens with ages between 15 and 19. As of June this year, out of the 941 pregnant women, 142 of them are in their teenage years.
Manhean Health Center Medical Superintendent Dr. Grace Andoh reported that there were about four women who attended ante-natal care last year and the ages of these women ranged from 10 to 14 years. However, this year the number rose to 16 cases. She believes that most of the reported deliveries took place at the Tema General Hospital.
In another development, out of the 1,469 tested for HIV/AIDS last year, more than forty are found to have tested positive from the disease.
