Danish researchers stated that pregnant mothers and those doing baby nursing should avoid taking antidepressants because they may inadvertently harm their babies in their wombs.

The researchers said that developmental milestones may be delayed with continuous use of these drugs. Dr. Lars Henning Pederson, one of the researchers, said that the drugs have significant effect on the fetus’ brain.

A report from Reuters revealed that about one in every six expectant mothers in the United States is diagnosed with some form of serious depressive disorder. Most of these patients get prescribed by Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac. Serotonin is the brain chemical that such medication targets because it is related to the appetite, attention and mood of the patient.

The researchers went through more than a hundred thousand pregnancy records in their Danish database. Their report was published in the medical journal Pediatrics.

The revenue is still lower than before but the measures done by the company resulted to a positive net income of $1.3 million. A year ago, the company lost $45.3 million on its shares due to the challenging economy.
